FROELICH HISTORIC SITE - Monona, Iowa

At the site, in 1892, John Froelich built the first gasoline powered tractor. An 1892 scale model is at the site. Reference material is also available. From this invention, the Waterloo Gasoline Tractor Engine Co. was started. Later on, this company was taken over by the John Deere Company. In the area, one can visit a restored 1891 mercantile store and a 1866 one-room school, each with related antiques and displays.

images.jpgOn hills that are part of the Wapsipinicon River Valley is the setting for this herb farm. From spring through the fall, Julia Ladd, a floral designer, and her staff keep busy growing, harvesting, and drying flowers from two-acres of gardens and the surrounding fields. All of the harvest is turned into seasonal arrangements. Julia over the years has experimented with varieties and drying techniques so that the arrangements developed show the natural beauty of each plant. Visitors can purchase flower arrangements at the site.

For over 85 years the community of Gladbrook has held a Corn Carnival for the residents and visitors to their town.

The summertime celebration, held in July, has everything you could want in a small town celebration. There are fireworks, concerts by the high school band, Litte Miss and Mr. Corn Carnival adn a Kiddies Parade. There is a carnival for all to enjoy.
