Camp Algona POW Museum - Algona, Iowa

Camp Algona POW MuseumCamp Algona POW Museum - Algona, Iowa The camp consisted of 178 buildings for the Prisoners of War from Germany. The 287 acres is just 2 miles west of Algona. It housed up to 10,000 German prisoners of war from 1944 through 1946.

The prisoners were paid $.10 an hour for their work in the economic development of the area. At the museum there are letters from prisoners stating that they were well treated while at the camp.

Buena Vista VistaThe Buena Vista County Museum is located in the downtown area of Storm Lake in a 1920 building constructed for the sale of Ford automobiles. Artifacts relating the region’s past have been preserved and some are on display.

Each year a new exhibit relating to a special theme is mounted; one such centered around sports, games, and recreation. Another dealt with educational opportunities in the area.

Battle Hill Museum Of Natural History - Battle Creek, Iowa

Battle Creek MuseumIn this town of Battle Creek with less than one thousand persons, visitors can look at over displays of 4,000 natural history specimens of both native and foreign animals and birds, including a full-mount African elephant, giraffe, and tiger. Also there is a replica limestone cave with 100 feet of trails. One can also look at specimens from nearby rivers, including a 545-pound clam.

The wildest woody in the Midwest is located in ArnoldsParkAmusement Park. Built in 1927, the Legend roller coaster is actually the 13th oldest wooden roller coaster in the U.S. Other classic park favorites include go-karts, bumper cars, the Tilt-a-Whirl, the Tipsy House and the Mirror Maze.

There is a simple two-story white frame house overlooking a junction in Wall Lake, Iowa, that is “note-worthy” to those who like the tunes made famous by singer Andy Williams—it is his birthplace and childhood home.

Built in 1890 by his great-grandfather, it has been restored to reflect the late 1920s and 1930s when Andy’s family lived there. Andy’s father worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and was also the choir director at one of the local churches; his mother played piano at the church, too.

Ambrose A Call State ParkThis 138-acre park near Algona, Iowa, contrasts quite strongly with the gently rolling farmland in the nearby area for it has rugged hills heavily wooded with virgin timber. It is near the east fork of the Des Moines River. Call and his brother Asa were early settlers in the area.
