Algona Nativity Scene - Algona, Iowa

Algona Nativity SceneAlgona was the site of a World War II prisoner of war camp that was constructed in 1943 and 1944 and was used until the war ended. The second group of prisoners came from Germany. One of them, Edward Kalb, came up with the idea of building a Nativity Scene. When completed by Kalb and five other prisoners, it contained more than sixty figures that are half life-size.

Here visitors can look at a depot, 1900s-era home, 1875 furnished schoolhouse, 1900s cars, tool shop, laundry facilities, and small grocery store. It has a room with military displays.

Abbie Gardner State Historic Site - Arnolds Park, Iowa

sm_gardner_massacre.jpgThis log cabin in Arnolds Park, originally built by Rowland Gardner in 1856, has been restored and contains furnishings that were typical of pioneer life in Iowa.

Most of the Gardner family and many of their neighbors were killed in 1857 by members of the Dakota Sioux Indian tribe during what has come to be known as the Spirit Lake Massacre.

Camp Harlan Civil War historical marker - Mount Pleasant, Iowa

campharlan.jpgSenator James Harlan of Mt. Pleasant was instrumental in working with the the War Department to authorized a military training camp at Mount Pleasant in October of 1861. The first recruits began arriving that September at Camp Harlan, which was designated as a cavalry training post for the Fourth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. Twelve companies had been mustered by November 23, 1831 with 1086 men and officers.

Burlington Bees Baseball - Burlington, Iowa - The stadium was originally built in 1947, burned in 1971 and was rebuilt and reopened in 1973. In 2005 the stadium was renovated with the labor of volunteers.

The Burlington Bees are a Class A minor league baseball team, affiliated with the Kansas City Royals, that plays in the Midwest League.
