The Gallup House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the birthplace and boyhood home of distinguished Iowa resident and renowned pollster George H. Gallup. Located just 45 minutes from Ames – home of Iowa State University, 90 minutes from Des Moines, and walking-distance to downtown Jefferson – a true small town in America’s Heartland, this home also has a unique octagon shape, hilltop location, and quiet residential setting. The house has undergone an adaptive reuse restoration, making the ideal venue for a variety of uses and experiences, including overnight stays, short- and long-term rentals, business or private retreats, educational meetings and seminars, tours, and private receptions. The home also features a gallery of historic photographs which spotlights George Gallup’s legacy and illustrates the ways in which he was influenced by his deep Iowan roots.

Our emphasis is on showing how people lived and worked in the not-so-distant past, when there were no computers, CDs, and pizza delivery. Those who have family in the area will want to check out our genealogy sources. At least twice a year we also have special exhibits, such as our recent Harvest Heritage exhibit, complete with antique tractors. Our Hall of Heroes contains the photos of over 200 men and women from Slater who served in the military from the Civil War onward.
