THE GALLUP HOUSE

A PLACE TO GATHER
The George Gallup House is the birthplace and boyhood home of Dr. George Gallup, the pioneer of public opinion polling. Located in Jefferson, Iowa, the house, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, also has a unique octagon shape, hilltop location, and quiet residential setting, all of which make it a perfect place to gather. Stay overnight. Plan a retreat. Take a vacation. Hold a meeting, conference, or reception. Tour the house. Visit the heartland. Refresh the spirit. Enjoy the Gallup House experience.

THE GALLUP HOUSE YESTERDAY
The Gallup House location originally encompassed 12.66 acres and included a small dairy operation, as well as tennis and basketball courts to the north, and a large garden to the south. Located on a raised picturesque lot, the home employs a cross between Craftsman and Victorian era styling, with its large windows, oak pocket doors and wood trim, formal entryway and open front staircase. The Gallup House, in addition to its historical importance, has many points of architectural interest, including its octagonal style, original quarter-sawn oak interior trim, and “secret” back stairway

ABOUT GEORGE GALLUP
Born, raised, and educated in Iowa, George Gallup had a lifelong passion for people and their ideas. His singular vision was that the solutions to many of the world’s problems would be found in understanding the thoughts and feelings of its citizens. His construct of polling for conveying people’s ideas, needs, and wishes to institutions, government, and companies is now used universally around the world and has caused him to become regarded as one of the most influential Americans of all time.

THE GALLUP HOUSE TODAY
The Gallup House has been completely renovated. Care has been taken to retain its historic charm, while updating its systems and conveniences. Old woodwork remains, later-added alterations have been removed, and modern technologies introduced. The three upstairs bedrooms are warm and comfortable. The three downstairs parlors are spacious and bright. The furnishings have been selected to be evocative of early design, but are crafted by contemporary, often local, artisans. The result is a comfortable, relaxing oasis that pays homage to the past while looking towards the future.

THE PARLORS
The first floor has 3 parlors for retreats, receptions, business meetings and other private events. Rooms are sparsely furnished for flexibility. Let us know your needs and we’ll help you find plenty of ways to use the space.

OVERNIGHT ROOMS
Upstairs there are three overnight rooms, all with private baths, two are adjoining.

  1. David Comstock, Jr. says:

The death of George Gallup Jr. prompted my visit to this site. My grandmother, Edna Gallup Short, was raised in this house and spoke of it often and lovingly. She spoke of the town, the local Indian tribes, and the care that went into building the house by her father. I am glad to see that the home is so welled cared for.
