A gift of 334 paintings from Charles August Ficke to the City of Davenport formed the nucleus of the Davenport Municipal Art Gallery’s permanent collection when it was established in 1925.
The Museum has more than 3,500 holdings in its permanent collection of nationally and internationally known works of art. Included in these are collections of American, European, Mexican colonial, and Haitian art, a Grant Wood self-portrait, and lithographs by Thomas Hart Benton.
In three of the gallaries exhibits are changed frequently. In the Children’s Orientation Gallery, children can learn about art at their own levels. This museum is Iowa’s oldest.
Due to space limitations, not all permanent collections are on display at any given time. If you are interested in viewing a particular collection, please call ahead to confirm what will be on view at the time of your visit.
The American Collection includes works from the Colonial period to 1945, with particular strengths in the 19th century landscape traditions of the Hudson River School artists Asher B. Durand, John Kensett, Albert Bierstadt and others. C. A. Ficke’s original gifts in this area have been enhanced by a number of generous donations including In the Wheatfield, by Winslow Homer, and In Gentle Slumber, by George Eastman.
