51 private citizens decided to bring live entertainment to the Dubuque, Iowa area in 1889, thus The Grand Opera House Company was formed. The Grand Opera House is the oldest theater in Dubuque, Iowa. It was built in 1889-1890 at an estimated cost of $65,000. With the Richardsonian architectural style, the original facade consists of St. Louis brick facing with Bayfield red sandstone trim.
Carmen was the opening night performance August 14, 1890. George M. Cohen, Lillian Russell, Ethel Barrymore, and Sara Bernhardt all preformed at the Grand in the early days. In later years even Henry Fonda preformed at the Grand.
This facility is being refurbished for the pleasure of those that enjoy true classic beauty.
