Restoration on the farm was completed in 2011, including the Mare barn, Stallion barn and Welcome Center.

The Hub City Heritage Museum opened in 1987 and features the railway express building, yard office, yard tower and a collection of locomotives, rolling stock, pump handcar and gift shop. There is also an extensive collecttion of employee records, pictures and other memorabilia.

The railway express building was originally the home of Wells Fargo. The yard office and yard tower were the heart of the Chicago Great Western in its heyday. The tower, which was built in 1953, is open to the public. It provides an outstanding view of the former CGW switching yards (which are now D&W), Transco and downtown Oelwein. The museum includes refurbished cabooses and engines.

The objectives of the Hub City Heritage Corporation are to encourage and promote the preservation and restoration of railroad memorabilia as it is pretinent to the Oelwein area. It is also to establish, furnish and maintain a railway museum for the education and enjoyment of the public.

The Gallup House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the birthplace and boyhood home of distinguished Iowa resident and renowned pollster George H. Gallup. Located just 45 minutes from Ames – home of Iowa State University, 90 minutes from Des Moines, and walking-distance to downtown Jefferson – a true small town in America’s Heartland, this home also has a unique octagon shape, hilltop location, and quiet residential setting. The house has undergone an adaptive reuse restoration, making the ideal venue for a variety of uses and experiences, including overnight stays, short- and long-term rentals, business or private retreats, educational meetings and seminars, tours, and private receptions. The home also features a gallery of historic photographs which spotlights George Gallup’s legacy and illustrates the ways in which he was influenced by his deep Iowan roots.
(Visited 1,550 times, 1 visits today)

Our emphasis is on showing how people lived and worked in the not-so-distant past, when there were no computers, CDs, and pizza delivery. Those who have family in the area will want to check out our genealogy sources.
