FFA Ag Museum – La Porte City, Iowa
This museum was opened in 1970 under the sponsorship of the La Porte City Chapter of the Future Farmers of America. Its exhibits include antique farm implements and hand tools and an extensive collection of 1890s-1900s artifacts. Among these are home economics, military, and religious items. Special exhibits include a doctor’s office, dentist’s office, and a barbershop.
In the mid-70s, the museum received a grant that enabled it to purchase the 1876-built La Porte City fire station and town hall. Also included in the purchase was the 1911-built jail. The jail now serves as the reception center for the museum. Because of the growth and the time requirements involved in running the museum, the FFA turned the museum over to the city. It now functions under the umbrella of the city council; its board is composed of five local citizens, the La Porte City FFA Chapter president and advisor.
