The museum is housed in a 11-room hotel. The hotel was the Ingalls family’s home during part of their two-year stay in Burr Oak. The family moved there in 1876. The hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been restored. Wilder was the author of the “Little House” books.

he Historical Society acquired the Wyth House in 1979 as a bequest from Dorothy G. Wyth who gave the house in memory of her parents, George and Alice Wyth. July 1, 1925 J. George and Alice W. Wyth purchased the property.

George Wyth achieved his greatest prominence as a founder and first president of Viking Pump Company.

This museum was opened in 1970 under the sponsorship of the La Porte City Chapter of the Future Farmers of America. Its exhibits include antique farm implements and hand tools and an extensive collection of 1890s-1900s artifacts. Among these are home economics, military, and religious items. Special exhibits include a doctor’s office, dentist’s office, and a barbershop.

Here visitors can view 200 prehistoric Native American burial and ceremonial mounds, dating from 500 B. C. to 1300 A. D. This is located on 1,500 acres of forested land along the Mississippi River bluffs. At the visitors center displays present background and history. Interpretative programs are available. The visitors center also has an auditorium. Outside one can find restored tall-grass prairies and wetlands and 11 miles of hiking trails.

The Museum complex is centered around the former Lenox College. The beautiful campus and buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America. The centerpiece of the campus is the Civil War Monument, dedicated 17 November, 1965. Construction of Old Main began in 1856 when the school was known as Bowen Collegiate Institute. The Victorian style east wing was added in 1875. Clarke Hall, the dormitory for girls, was built in 1890. Doolittle Hall, constructed in 1900, contained the Library and Literary Societies.

The present Cresco, Iowa Theatre was built in 1914 and called the Cresco Opera House. It was there that traveling repertoire companies would come to town and perform in the time between 1914 and the late 1920s. The opera house has been restored to its original grandeur through careful preservation efforts, including the chandelier in the main lobby and a unique decorative plaster relief scheme.

This chapel is known as the “world’s smallest church.” It was built in 1885 and measures fourteen feet by twenty feet. The belfry is forty feet high.

Constructed of stones quarried at Snake Hollow, Joseph Spielman donated $20 toward a bell and Johann Gaertner, then 92 years of age, donated $75 to pay for the wood used in building the chapel. Frank Joseph Huber and his wife, Mary Ann, paid the balance. The chapel dedication took place in 1886.
