CEDAR VALLEY NATURE TRAIL - Evansdale, Iowa
Along a converted railroad bed a 52-mile nature trail linking Cedar Falls and Waterloo has been developed. This “linear” park features beautiful scenery and historical landmarks along the way. Different sections of the trail parallel the Cedar River. The trail is described as “mulit-use,”—generally restricted to non-motorized, non-equestrian activities, such as hiking, biking, roller-blading, and nature walks.
CASSVILLE FERRY - Millville, Iowa
One of the few remaining Mississippi River ferries operating in Iowa goes from Millville to Cassville, Wisconsin. The service had been discontinued, but recently the ferry was restored and is back in operation. It has the capability to carry 12 cars across.
CARTER HOUSE MUSEUM - Elkader, Iowa
This home is an excellent example of Greek Revival architecture, one of the best in Iowa. It was built in 1850. Displayed in it are various area artifacts and antiques. The exhibits include Victorian clothing and furniture, military and pharmacy items, and antique tools. The museum also has photographs from the 1800s.
Carrie Lane Chapman Catt Girlhood Home - Charles City, Iowa
Carrie (Lane) Chapman Catt revitalized the National American Woman Suffrage Association and played a leading role in its successful campaign to win voting rights for women.
In 1920 she founded the League of Women Voters upon ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
CARNEGIE CULTURAL CENTER - New Hampton, Iowa
In an old Carnegie library, the town has developed a cultural center and museum. Permanent exhibits include the Natvig Brothers Miniature Circus, a Railroad Room, the Old Toy Shop, and Tunnell Eyeglass Collection. Temporary exhibits rotate bimonthly.
The mission of the Carnegie Cultural Center is to establish a vital presence of the arts, history, and cultural awareness for the benefit, enlightenment, and enjoyment of all Chickasaw County residents and visitors.
Blackhawk Bridge - Lansing, Iowa
This bridge was completed in 1931, crossing the Mississippi River with a design that has attracted not only local but national attention for it’s beauty.
The Black Hawk Bridge spans the Mississippi River, joining the town of Lansing
to rural Crawford County, Wisconsin. Named for Chief Black Hawk, it is popularly referred to as the "Lansing bridge".
BIG SPRINGS TROUT HATCHERY - Elkader, Iowa
This is a state-owned fish hatchery that has 24 spring-fed raceways. These house rainbow, spotted, and brown trout as they are developing. The trout are raised to stockable size and then released to conservation boards in northeast Iowa who are watching over 21 different streams. Special tours and/or presentations on Iowa’s trout program, fish production, water quality, and acid rain are available at the hatchery.
Bennington No. 4 School - Waterloo, Iowa
This is a a one-room school built in 1911. This school is still located on it’s orginal site. It is on the National Historic Register.
Experience 20th century life from 1945-1955 at the school and three outbuildings.
Beadle Park - Cresco, Iowa
Across the street from the Cresco Welcome Center is located Beadle Park. Displayed in this area are an historic 1854-constructed Log Cabin and a 1951-built diesel electric locomotive. The cabin was continually occupied for one hundred and ten years. In 1964 it was donated to the Howard County Historical Society and moved, and a museum has been developed inside.
BACKWATER CRUISES - Lansing, Iowa
A 49-passenger paddlewheeler, Coast Guard-approved, cruises around the shallow backwaters of the Upper Mississippi River in the area. Visitors can view the fine display of lilies and other vegetation on land and water. It is also possible to see fur-bearing wildlife at times. Narrators present the history of the waters being navigated.
