In this small town in northern Iowa there was an act of horrific cruelness perpetrated on a kitten some years ago when someone, on a very cold winter night, dumped a kitten into the book return box at the library (or it could be that he got in there by himself to try to find warmth..).  The next morning, as the books were being taken from the box, the head librarian, Vicky Myron , found the kitten and took it into the library.  The poor kitten’s feet were frostbitten but he was so glad to be found and warm that he let everyone know how grateful he was.  The librarian decided that the kitten should have a home in the library and thus began the life of Dewey named for "Dewey Decimal System" the library cat of Spencer, Iowa.

This museum in Cylinder,Iowa,is located in an 1895 church that still has its original stained-glass windows. Artifacts pertaining to the only town in the United States with such a name are located here. Railroad memorabilia is also on display. Here one can see the only bank in Palo Alto County that remained open during the Depression; one of the interesting items on display is a telegraph set. Outside of the museum a old country school has been located.

Rock Forest SchoolRock Forest School - Peterson, Iowa is one of the first frame school houses in Clay County in Iowa. It was completely restored and furnished in 1963 by the Peterson Lions Club.

This school joins others in the state for the restored one room schools for the visitor to the area to tour to get a sense of how classes were taught in the past. Have a great experience tasting history while visiting Clay County in Iowa.

The three principal lakes of the group are Spirit Lake, West Okoboji Lake, and East Okoboji Lake. They are the largest natural lakes in the state of Iowa. The largest, Spirit Lake, is 5,684 acres (23 km²).

The opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating, summer theater, amusement park or any number of other activities the Iowa Great Lakes is an ideal place to be.

Kearny State Park is located on its western shore and offers a camp ground, boat dock, swimming, and fishing. Next door to the Park is an excellent public golf course and a restaurant and lounge. Winter offers opportunities for snowmobiling, cross country skiing, ice fishing, hockey, and recreational skating.
