Pella Opera House – Pella, Iowa

Pella Opera House – Pella, Iowa The Pella Opera House is the largest institution for the arts in Marion County and provides a key anchor in the touring schedules of artists for the Midwest audiences.

First opened as an Opera House in 1900 the community supported the old facility and in 1990 renovation was done to make it appealing to the community and provide the wonderful opportunity to see great entertainment locally.

The facility has ornate tin ceilings, stained glass windows and hundreds of incandescent lights. The wonders the theatre contained are restored: balcony, box seats, orchestra pit, dressing rooms. State of the art stage lighting, sound, and audio-visual systems were installed. Finishing touches included stenciling and other decorative detailing.

A history of the facility states that the Pella Opera House was used for musical and theatrical performances until they were replaced by motion pictures, due to popular demand. Eventually, the movies closed, and the once-grand Pella Opera House was altered to house businesses including a skating rink, bowling alley, and hardware store.

A feasibility study conducted in 1987 by the Pella Community Development Committee showed that The Pella Opera House could be saved. With restoration and renovation it could once again become an important part of the Pella community. It could serve us as a unique facility not only for recitals, performances, and light opera, but also for meetings, receptions, and conferences. It can be a fascinating place for tourists to relive a little Pella history as they enjoy local and national world-class productions.

The Pella Opera House is now on the list of National Historical sites.

The Pella Opera House has had over 15,000 people visit and has hosted over 400 events.

The Pella Opera House is handicap accessible. The Opera House main theater seats 328 people, and the Great Hall on the main floor will accommodate up to 200 for receptions, meetings, banquets and other events
