Tulip Time in Pella is the first weekend in May. The city comes alive with a parade, garden displays of tulips and celebrations.

The Pella Tulip Festival began in 1935 in celebration of the town’s heritage. It is a three day event that features street washing parades, costumed wooden shoe dancers, wooden shoe carving demonstrations, street venders selling poffertjes (Poffertjes are a traditional Dutch batter treat.

Just 30 miles south of Des Moines this winery grows it’s own grapes to produce true Iowa wine.

The winery facility will feature a tasting room and gift shop (scheduled to open in 2008), as well as public seating areas overlooking the vineyard. There also will be a pond and various footpaths throughout the property. Building plans also include a reception hall and business meeting rooms. This new facility will certainly be someplace you want to visit.

Southern Hills Winery offers eight great wines: You’re Making me Blush, Iowa Edelweiss, Iowa LaCrosse, Kick and a Pat, Blanket on a Hill, Seyval Uptown Saturday Night, Paint the Town Red and Outback Zac. Southern Hills Winery of Osceola received silver medals for its Edelweiss and You’re Making Me Blush wines, as well as a bronze for its Outback Zak, at the inaugural Mid-American Wine Competition at Des Moines Area Community College the summer of 2007.

All restorations and additions were supported by contributions.
