Tucked into the southeastern area of Iowa is the charming community of Bentonsport where in the 1940’s the river town was a busy port-of-call for the Des Moines River steamers to dock.  The village was the first stop for a number of people that wanted to come to the area to see if this was the place they wanted to settle down or to start either a business or farming.  The village is nestled into the hills with the trees giving it a special elegance, even after all these years.

Not too far from the Mississippi River that runs through Iowa you will find the little town of Oakville.  The town got devastated by the floods of 2008 but with all the devastation came the wonders of the past.  The flood unearthed a prehistoric village buried under the ground that was washing open during the flood.

Brazelton House - Mt. Pleasant, Iowa

Sitting on the corner of Saunders and Main St. in the town of Mt. Pleasant is this outstanding Italianate home built in 1858 by William Brazelton, a banker and developer in the community.  The home has double brick wall construction, 10 1/2 ft. to 14 ft. ceilings throughout the home, large rooms and a warmth of history.

The house was entered into the National Historic Register on 01/27/1983.  The plaque is attached to the front porch wall while the certificate hangs in the large living room.

This home is one of the "Three Sister Houses" in Mt. Pleasant.  The three houses are within a four block radius of each other, each in the Italinate design.  The Brazelton House is considered to be the most ornate and beautiful of the three. 

The history of the house tells of the many influencial guests who have been in the home over the years, including the grandson of Abraham Lincoln who had his leg set in the doctor’s office, which was located in the home.  There were two different doctors that had their office in the house over the years

The house has 2963 sq. ft of living space and a full basement with seperate entrance. 

The house is a private residence, currently on the market listed with www.cottagerealty.com due to transfer of the owners.

This is one of just twelve original national cemeteries designated by the U.S. Congress.

During the Civil War, the presence of the College of Physicians and Surgeons caused the federal government to locate a military hospital in Estes House (formerly at 500 Main Street), and four other sites in Keokuk.

There are approximately 7 miles of hiking and biking trails that take visitors through a diversity of landscapes, such as timber, pine tree plantings, meadows, and reintroduced prairies. A 75-foot swinging bridge connects a picnic area with a camping area. In the campground are both camping pads—complete with electricity—and cabins.

Located in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa - Iowa Wesleyan College, founded in 1842, is the oldest, church-related, degree granting institution west of the Mississippi. Many of its early buildings exhibit various styles of architecture and are still in use as classrooms.

This is a private four-year liberal arts college of the United Methodist Church.  The college hosts the honor of including Pioneer Hall and Old Main on the National Register of Historic Places.  The chapel on the campus is under going a complete renovation.  There are new living quarters, Nemitz Hall, on the campus and the newer Howe Activity Center.

The Prison is a place to look at but you certainly don’t want to be a resident! The penitentiary was built in 1839 this is a maximum secutiry prison.

Iowa State Penitentiary is the oldest prison west of the Mississippi.

This is a perennial flower nursery that display flowers in theme gardens and fields. Classrooms, a tea room, gift shop are located in a peg and post barn.

Take a walk through the gardens and look at the variety of flowers during different growing seasons. The owners will answer questions for you and make suggestions on types of plants that you find interesting.
