This Mount Pleasant Italiante style home was built by James Harlan on the edge of the Iowa Wesleyan College campus and was completed in 1872. Harlan was the first Republican Senator from the State of Iowa and he became a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln’s son Robert married Harlan’s daughter Mary. Robert, Mary, and their three children spent much time visiting in Mt. Pleasant during the next thirty years.

George M. Verity Riverboat Museum - Keokuk, Iowa The paddle boat was built in Dubuque, Iowa by the U.S. Government in 1927. The George M. Verity was donated to the City of Keokuk in 1961 after being retired from service.

DuPont’s Iowa Powder Mills (Powedertown)- Keokuk, Iowa. Powdertown, or, the Iowa Powder Mills were part of DuPont’s expansion during the late 1800’s. Black blasting powder was what they manufactured here, and was sold and shipped to various mining operations in the Midwest. The plant operated from 1898-1949.

Description – This building was originally constructed as a glove and mitten factory in 1909; it then became a creamery in 1928. Now its displays highlight the dairy industry in an area entitled “From Bossy to Butter” and various aspects of local history.

Crapo Park - Burlington, Iowa
This 85 acre park was established in 1895 through the efforts of Philip Crapo, a local businessman and philanthropist. There was a great flurry of activity in 1896 to ready the park for the Iowa semi-centennial. The roads and plantings were designed at that time by the landscape engineering firm of Earnshaw and Punshon of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Crapo Park is well known for its plant material. Many different species of trees and shrubs have been planted over the years and the Parks Department continues to add to the variety. Today, there are over 200 species which provide color and beauty throughout the seasons. In addition, the Parks Department plants numerous perennial and annual flowers which add color from spring to fall.

Senator James Harlan of Mt. Pleasant was instrumental in working with the the War Department to authorized a military training camp at Mount Pleasant in October of 1861. The first recruits began arriving that September at Camp Harlan, which was designated as a cavalry training post for the Fourth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. Twelve companies had been mustered by November 23, 1831 with 1086 men and officers.
