In the late 1800s, Creston was a major railroad hub in the western part of Iowa with more than 50 trains coming through the town daily. One of the largest engine houses was erected there to service the trains. A large brick-and-stone, two-story depot was erected in 1899 and has been restored. It now houses city offices and a senior citizen’s center.
This is the focal point of downtown Council Bluffs. Ther park is the home of the Mormon Trail Monument, the Spanish American War Veterans Monument, the Civil War Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial. Along with those is the newly completed Veternans Plaza honoring our country soldiers.
Located in Corning, Iowa this museum is in the building erected to serve as the jail for Adams County and did so from 1877-1955. Its displays trace the county history beginning with events of 1853. It contains military artifacts, items from the old jail, Icarian memorabilia, and material from a county physician. One display deals with a one-room Icarian school.
In a ten-acre area near Greenfield, Iowa, visitors can tour the main museum building and other sites at the complex. The museum has an extensive library and a number of display rooms. Outside one can look at a restored country schoolhouse, depot, country church, wooden windmill, city barn. The birthplace home of former Iowa governor George Wilson is located in the area. A collection of antique machinery is on display.
The museum features WWII memorabilia and four airplanes: Gen. Reggie Ersler’s P-51 Gunfighter, a SNJ, Steinson L5, and Steinson L3. Visit the annual air show Labor Day Weekend.
