Sugar Clay Winery – Thurman, Iowa
Tucked into the rural Loess Hills is the charming winery called Sugar Clay run by Owners, Vintners & Winemakers,Frank and Amy Faust. They encourage you to come, taste their wines, enjoy the peace and serenity of their patio while absorbing the wonders of the Loess Hills.
The six acre vineyard will enchant you as will the wine that is produced from the lush grapes this rich land provides. Whether you prefer the dry wines; semi-dry/semi-sweet; sweet; Cedar Ridge Red (which is currently sold out); Chardonnel; Loess Hills Blush; Iowa St. Croix; Edelweiss; Grasshopper Hill; Dutch Hollow White (which is also sold out at this time); Faust Haus Rosa or the Blackberry Mead (another favorite that is not currently available but keep checking back!) you will find the wine that suits your taste. The care and talent put forth to create these wonderful wines will have you coming back often for more.
The Faust’s, along with their family and friends, planted their 6-acre vineyard in the spring of 2001 and additional grapevines were planted in 2004. The current grape varieties grown in the vineyard were carefully selected for our Midwest climate. These include Marechal Foch, St. Vincent, Catawba, Edelweiss, Chambourcin, Seyval, Vidal Blanc, Norton-Cynthiana, Vignoles, and Concord.
Be sure to check out their entertainment calendar, they provide the music for your pleasure and pay for the bands with the proceeds from the sale of the wine so buy a wonderful bottle or two, sit back and enjoy the evenings. They also ship to designated areas and have wines available at some retail locations as well as at the winery.
