This house, in Lewis, Iowa, overlooking a bend in the East Nishnabotna River, was a station on the Underground Railroad. The house was built in 1856 by Rev. George B. Hitchcock and is made of brown sandstone quarried from a local quarry. The walls average 21 inches thick. The wood used in the construction is locally grown oak and walnut. The house has a full basement, including a massive fireplace.

This Second-Empire home built in 1869-1870 by General Grenville Dodge and his wife is now a museum. Dodge was a Civil War officer, railroad builder, banker, and politician. The home has been restored and contains Victorian furnishings, many of the Dodges’ possessions including his extensive library. During the Christmas holiday time, the home is graced with 20 decorated trees.

This historical site is a memorial to Merle Hay, who was one of the first U.S. soldiers, and the first Iowan, killed in World War I. Merle Hay is buried at the Merle Hay Memorial cemetery.

In 1921, the road that leads from Des Moines to Camp Dodge was named Merle Hay Road in honor of his sacrifice.
